This course will review the definitions of child abuse and neglect and will present real-life case examples. Ocular and systemic signs of child abuse, along with differentials, including current legal challenges, and confounding diagnoses, will be covered. The practitioner will learn what to do when encountering a case of suspected child abuse or neglect.
Learning Objectives:
Upon conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
Understand the legal definitions of child abuse and neglect, including different types of child abuse
Recognize clinical signs of a patient who may be suffering from abuse or neglect and differentials for these signs
Know the requirements for reporting child abuse and understand that there may be nuances between states
Become familiar with other conditions, such as Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA), and the implications for practitioners when this condition is suspected
Become aware of and to learn how to address cultural differences relating to children and authority and/or gender inequality that may present during the exam
Become familiar with recent legal challenges in the area of child abuse
